In my attempt to force myself to write on a regular basis, I decided to go ahead and write a post about soccer today. I think it's perfectly fitting as I pride myself as a soccer player and a member of it's global community. As you all know the women's world cup just ended after this past month of games and for those of you that followed the tournament at all, regardless of the minutes of games you watched, you know it was an epic display of athleticism and a goosebump-evoking show of the spirit of many teams playing for the pride of their country. What a glorious event, indeed. I love soccer no matter the forum, but every four years we get to watch the Men compete in this global tournament and the following year witness the same with the women. I think bringing the world together for the FIFA World Cups and also the Olympics we get to see humanity's emotional connection to sports.
I was lucky enough to play soccer in my lifetime and have it make a lasting impact on my life that I know will live and breathe in my body until I'm too old to remember what I'm watching. I think most sports fans, no matter the sport, put so much effort into their loyalty to teams and sports that its one of the only things that can bring people together consistently. I really enjoyed watching the USWNT bring pride to our country and show that with their nation rallying behind them, they could prove they have what it takes to not only put on a show of athletic talent and impressive skill, but bring the United States the sport of soccer and the sense of participating in the world's game. The progress has been incredible over the past several years, but I think Americans have a hard time embracing a sport that we aren't the best at. The whole world has a head start on us, and when we are able to compete on the world's stage and show that we can compete with the rest of the world, our country starts to embrace it. And unfortunately keeping that interest alive in between these tournaments is what has to continue, but we're getting there. It is the most impressive sport in my opinion, the ability, energy, and excitement is incomparable to other games.
I encourage everyone that reads this and isn't already involved in the magic of soccer to start following the sport and going to games! Read up on the rules, get familiar with the game and enjoy it! And ladies...we have it the best as fans. We can watch the women compete and kick butt, it's so empowering. But we also get to watch 22 perfectly sexy and fit men run around each other for 90 minutes of pure bliss. Come on...what more could you ask for?
